Damlag: Ilang kaugmaon, Ihatag karon or Project Damlag is now on its second year!
In 2013, Project Damlag was able to increase the number of enrolled students from 203 to 222 students of Napalico Elementary School, Arakan Valley, North Cotabato. On August 31, 2013, the UPOAAAI together with the resident members in UP Mindanao visited Brgy. Napalico, Arakan, North Cotabato. The visit is for the distribution of school supplies to our Project Damlag Batch 1 Scholars. The supplies include a backpack, ballpens, pencils, erasers, colored pens, paper, notebooks, and a raincoat. On the same day, the school fees of the scholars were also turned over to Napalico Elementary School Principal Anita T. Suriaga.
In December 2013, Switotwins Digital Storytelling Philippines visited Napalico and facilitated a 2-day Digital Storytelling workshop benefiting 15 students from grades 4-6. The workshop includes the students composing a story (fiction or real life experience), drawing scenes for the storyboard, taking pictures of the storyboard, and recording a narration of the story to the computer. The facilitators, Gloryrose and Glorypearl Dy showed the students how to manipulate the computer and helped make each group’s movie.
Two days after the workshop, the participants were awarded certificates for having completed the workshop. The students and the volunteers also watched the participants’ outputs and a movie using an LCD projector flashing the movie on the wall of the new building while the 222 kids sat and tried to fit themselves in the tiny new room. Many of the students confessed that they had never seen a movie on a big screen or “dako na TV” (big TV) as they said. Some don’t even have TV sets in their homes. Many of the volunteers were teary-eyed after hearing such and seeing them so amazed watching the movie.
It was also their first time to taste milk bars, thanks to our sponsor from Malagos Garden Resort.
In the afternoon, the second batch were given their own set of school supplies and celebrated Christmas with the volunteers.
It was a priceless moment to have been able to give, to share, and experience genuine happiness with the students. Thank you to all the sponsors! ^_^
